New York CNN —When Minouche Shafik was announced as Columbia University’s president last year, she was called the “perfect candidate” by the chair of Columbia’s Board of Trustees. University of Pennsylvania president Liz Magill and Harvard University president Claudine Gay both stepped down in the wake of pressure over their response to antisemitism on campus. They say the crackdown on student protests, which resulted in more than 100 arrests, violated academic freedom. “I am here today, joining my colleagues and calling on President Shafik to resign if she cannot immediately bring order to this chaos,” Johnson said. Last week, Shafik authorized the New York Police Department to sweep the “Gaza Solidarity Encampment” on Columbia’s campus.

The Trump Organization, Trump, and lieutenants face a $364 million judgment in a civil fraud case. But several factors, including the extent of Trump's fraud, could make him an outlier. "If allowed to stand, this ruling will only further expedite the continuing exodus of companies from New York," the Trump Organization spokesperson said. It's also worth noting the exceptional circumstances that led to the investigation into the Trump Organization. While running for attorney general in 2018, James promised to aggressively investigate Trump's business dealings.

Rep. Lauren Boebert is renting an apartment from a top official at a Koch-backed organization. The official, who Insider is not naming for security reasons, has been a senior executive with Koch-linked groups for years. There are no ethics rules or laws that bar members of Congress from renting apartments from people affiliated with lobbying groups. He added that Boebert was not aware the owners were connected to the Koch-backed group. Usually, the House forbids independent media coverage of proceedings, meaning that networks must rely on a government feed for coverage. But when there are special events taking place in the House, such as the election for speaker, independent coverage is allowed. In this case, that translates to C-SPAN deploying multiple cameras of its own into the House chamber, giving the public a rare front row view of the high-stakes negotiations between lawmakers. For example, C-SPAN’s cameras showed Republican Rep. Paul Gosar, who has voted against Kevin McCarthy for speaker, on the floor speaking Tuesday with Democratic Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez. You don’t see that during standard coverage.”O’Connell noted that C-SPAN would like to be able to do this far more often.
Riot Games wants out of a roughly $96 million agreement with bankrupt crypto firm FTX. Last week, the company cited "reputational harm" in a court filing, in which it outlined the terms of the deal. But now Riot wants to terminate the agreement amid FTX's collapse and its cofounder and former CEO Sam Bankman-Fried's arrest earlier this month for numerous fraud-related charges. "Media outlets and Twitter commentators splashed images of Mr. Bankman-Fried playing 'League of Legends' — Riot Games' game — at the same time that FTX was crashing." Riot Games and FTX did not immediately reply to Insider's request for comment.
Voters in Florida's 10th congressional district elected 25-year-old Maxwell Frost to the U.S. House of Representatives in November, making him the first member of Gen Z elected to Congress. Soon to be 26, Frost is on the older end of Gen Z, but his rental dilemma already demonstrates his relatability to his young constituents. And among Gen Zers who've been able to, 32% are spending half their monthly income on housing, Credit Karma found. Ocasio-Cortez remains the youngest woman in Congress, but Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-N.C.) replaced her as the youngest member during his tenure. Cawthorn will maintain the title of youngest person elected to Congress, but Frost will become the youngest sitting member when he's sworn in in January.
Several Republican candidates for Congress have ties to the January 6 Capitol attack. Van Orden at the time wrote that he had been in Washington, DC, for "meetings and to stand for the integrity of our electoral system as a citizen." A representative for Van Orden did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment. Smith won a crowded primary against seven other Republican candidates in May and secured Trump's endorsement in September. Jeff Zink is up against Democratic incumbent Rep. Ruben Gallego in Arizona's 3rd Congressional District.
